Don't be a jerk.
Read the canon. Certain events seriously affect a person's life, and when they don't happen, it ripples out. You have to know the canon in order to understand what it means to a person. For this, we will be looking for details that tie your character to their canon counterpart. We will be looking for that same thread that defines them. So, go to scans daily, buy old issues, torrent the shit out of back issues. Whatever you have to do, outside of just reading the wikipedia pages, know your character.
